Wales celebrates Dydd Gŵyl Dewi

The City Of Cardiff joined with the whole of Wales in celebrating St David’s Day on March 1. The Western Mail estimated that 8,000 watched the parade, which formed up at the City Hall, marched down St Mary Street and up The Hayes pedestrian precinct, to finish at The Hayes bandstand – but Frank Hennessy, presenter of Celtic Heartbeat and lead singer of The Hennessys, predicted: “The parade is MASSIVE!”

Meic Petersen, as Dewi Sant, led the parade, with Welsh piper Geraint Roberts behind him. The Mayor of Cardiff led the Filipino and Nepalese associations, the Breton band Bagad Kadoudal, the Welsh learners, CLERA Welsh instruments, the schools, Cwmni Caerdydd, a breathtakingly large statue of Tom Jones, the Adamant Marching Band and all the Cardiff associations who wanted to celebrate on this proud day.

They’re here! The flags, bearing St David’s cross, herald the parade. A giant Tom Jones in the parade? But then, it’s not unusual…
Meurig Williams (with fiddle) and Pat Smith (with Welsh hat) lead the CLERA musicians in the parade Greetings from Brittany: the Breton pipes, bombardes and drums band, Bagad Kadoudal, make an awesome sound

All that jazz: The Adamant Marching Band delight the Hayes crowds. Mike Kennedy, pictured here playing the big bass drum, is bass guitar player with the Calennig Big Band, twmpaths a speciality!

Great To Be Welsh: Allan Yn Y Fan keep the pot boiling while The Hayes waits for the parade
